Human Realm
The bittersweet hub of joy and sorrow, a sacred land of awakening through the illusory to cultivate the true.
"Those who attain a human body are like a blind turtle happening upon a floating log. Although the human realm undergoes all the sufferings of birth, aging, sickness, and death, it is the only one among the Six Realms that possesses enough clear wakefulness to transcend fate and leap out of samsara — the pivotal junction of destiny."
Karmic Causes and Universal Laws (Why Enter This Path?)
The fundamental karmic cause for being born into the human realm lies in upholding the “Five Precepts” over many lifetimes (not killing to perfect benevolence, not stealing to perfect righteousness, not committing sexual misconduct to perfect propriety, not lying to perfect trustworthiness, and not drinking alcohol to perfect wisdom), together with the great ethical paths of loyalty, filial piety, propriety, and righteousness. The heavenly realm is too blissful to contemplate life and death; the evil realms are too painful and shrouded by fear to hear the Dharma. Only the human realm has suffering and joy in equal measure — it has both piercing pain that awakens the spirit and a clear mind capable of cultivating the great path.
Modern Psychological Reflections and Characteristics in the Present Life
The core characteristic of human psychology is “craving and clinging (the thirst for connection and security).” Humans are constantly pursuing being loved, being recognized, material wealth, and reproduction and lineage continuation, wavering back and forth between sensory desires and the awakening of conscience. There is suffering, yet there is also awareness; every severe physical and mental trauma contains a spiritual opportunity for complete awakening and seeing through illusions.
Astrological Chart Imprints and Traces of Past-Life Karma
In the Eight Characters, the Five Elements are balanced and pure; the four auspicious gods — Wealth, Officer, Seal, and Eating God — generate and transform one another with affection. In the birth chart, the Sun and Moon are balanced. Saturn brings trials and tempering, but Jupiter brings the protection of higher wisdom. In the Damo Yizhang Jing, the main star falls into the “Human Realm,” valuing love and righteousness and family ethics, forging destiny through hard work with one’s own hands.
The Five Signs of Decay of Heavenly Beings (The Danger of Falling from Bliss)
Though the human realm is good, it is replete with the eight fundamental sufferings: birth, aging, sickness, death, separation from loved ones, association with the hated, unfulfilled desires, and the blazing of the five aggregates. Human life is short, merely a few decades, fleeting as a white colt passing a gap; if in this life one is lost in material desires and fame, committing evil deeds, in an instant one may fall into the three lower realms and suffer for hundreds of kalpas.

Establish an unshakable moral baseline of karma and cause and effect; treat life, work, and interpersonal relationships as a training ground for spiritual practice; see clearly that the physical body and worldly wealth are merely borrowed tools, and by means of this rare human body in this life, listen to the true Dharma, comprehend the great Way of heaven and earth, and complete the sublimation and awakening of the soul.
