Western Astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac. This system is anchored to the Earth's relationship with the Sun and our seasons. In this system, 0 degrees of Aries always begins on the exact moment of the Spring Equinox (usually March 20th or 21st), regardless of where the actual stars are in the sky.
Because it is tied to the seasons, Western astrology is highly psychological. It focuses on your personality, your ego, and your psychological evolution.
Vedic Astrology: The Sidereal Zodiac (Stars)
Vedic Astrology uses the Sidereal Zodiac. This system tracks the actual, physical, observable positions of the constellations in the sky today.
Here is the catch: The Earth wobbles on its axis like a spinning top. This wobble is called the Precession of the Equinoxes. Because of this wobble, the seasons (Tropical) and the physical stars (Sidereal) drift apart by about 1 degree every 72 years.
About 2,000 years ago, both zodiacs lined up perfectly. Today, they are about 24 degrees apart. This mathematical difference is called the Ayanamsa (most commonly the Lahiri Ayanamsa).
Therefore, if your Western Sun is at 15 degrees Leo, your Vedic Sun will be shifted backward by 24 degrees, landing at 21 degrees Cancer.
