Mian Ran Da Shi (Burning Face Mahasattva / Scorched-Face Asura Ghost King)
With two horns on his head, he spews blazing fire from his mouth and bares a blue face with fangs. Guanyin Mahasattva manifested this true body of the Asura Ghost King in order to subdue the violent Asura evil ghosts. He is the sovereign who, during the Zhongyuan Festival, leads all ten thousand malevolent spirits to take refuge.
Divine Origins and Epic Legacy
According to the “Dharani Sutra for Rescuing the Burning-Mouth Hungry Ghosts”, the Venerable Ananda was practicing meditative absorption in the forest when he saw the Scorched-Face Asura Ghost King appear, spitting fire and baring his teeth. This deity is actually Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who seeks out cries to relieve suffering. Knowing well that an ordinary merciful and kind appearance could not intimidate the violent Asuras of the underworld, he specially manifested a wrathful, ferocious, and extreme visage to counter violence with violence.
